Lena Horne had several relationships over the course of her life. She was married three times and had several other romantic affairs.
Her first marriage was to Louis Jordan Jones, a Pittsburgh-based civil rights activist, in 1937. The couple had two children together but divorced in 1944.
In 1947, Horne married Lennie Hayton, a Jewish composer and arranger who was also a musical director at MGM. They faced scrutiny and backlash for their interracial marriage, which was illegal in several states at the time. The couple was together until Hayton's death in 1971.
Horne also had affairs with several famous men, including Orson Welles, Joe Louis, and Billy Strayhorn. She had a close friendship with singer and activist Paul Robeson, but their relationship was reportedly purely platonic.
Despite some controversy surrounding her marriages and relationships, Horne was a trailblazer in Hollywood and the music industry. She famously rejected stereotypical roles for Black actresses and used her platform to advocate for civil rights.
